Kevin Boulton, a 3D Modeller and Animator shares with us his process of modeling this beautiful Wiesmann GT MF57 car as part of the Car Render Challenge 2017. He does this in 3ds Max, V-Ray and Photoshop.

[post_ads] The first stage was to confirm the concept and to watch many car clay model videos on Youtube and gather as many reference shots as possible. This showed me exactly what tools are used in this profession and how the cars are blocked out first with foam and a wood frame in some cases. Next step was to work out what car will lend itself to this fluid technique. I landed on the Wiesmann Roadster due to its long sweeping lines that would show drag marks in the clay nicely.

At this point we had just exchanged on a house so between the 25th of October and November time was rather short with moving.

From roughing out the mesh to detailing the final curves and objects, the Clay Maker model was created over lunch hours at work and some long late nights in the studios. All through the project I had been saving images from Intagram with clay automotive modelling as inspiration.

For fine details I began to use the particle system in 3DsMax to scatter clay particles over the car and for the wooden base (see WIP). To accompany this I used clay in the diffuse texture of the wooden base with a displace map to make the clay rise from the wood. I tried to keep the textures simple and clean to let the light pick out the details. The same methods were applied to the handles of the tools.

Once all supporting details were completed I added a simple backdrop that the DOF would blur out. I thought the softer the backdrop the more attention would be drawn to the car and details in the clay. This is why I also chose to light it from the sides to avoid flattening the details from a front light.

Post productions was worked on in Photoshop utilizing the "camera Raw filter" and the 16bit render passes. Again I kept the layering and adjustments clean and simple to let the model come thought without being over done by effects. (layering attached)

...and that's it, short and sweet. The idea I feel is just as important as the final render.
