'The Girl' is the main character for upcoming animated short movie 'Relicts', dark mystery set in a cold atmosphere of an isolated village. We have Arkadiy Demchenko to explain about how to create realistic character for the film using Zbrush, Autodesk Maya, Nuke, Mental Ray.

The story of her creation has started with the first conceptual designs made by Valeriy Zrazhevskiy, then got further development by Anna Mitura-Laskowska. We gave her a simple dress and old oversized coat, probably her husband's, to create a bit childish, sincere and naive look.
Sculpting, texturing and hair/fur was done by Mohsen Fallah in ZBrush, Maya and Photoshop. Since there's no real actress to scan, we modelled her the 'traditional' way and spent a lot of time tweaking proportions and elements of her face, trying to catch that distinct concept look coupled with setting believability and plain visual sympathy, trying to make this mix 'just about right'. Also we've made sure to add a lot of asymmetry and defects to her skin, like moles, cuts, acnes, etc. With 40 individual objects her model consists of around 100 mil polygons.
Her hair took some time to style. Braid is an important part of the character, so, it had to be very specific in terms of weave, length, thickness and curvature, following the concept art. It ended up being 60k hairs with 30 mil segments.
Fuzz is very important for face and body. We've added it to pretty much every cloth element as well.
Rendering was done with mental ray renderer. Skin shader is a custom made phenomena based on several mia_material and misss_fast_shader to export each shading element, including 2 specular and 3 subsurface layers, into separate AOVs for compositing.
Compositing was done in Nuke.
What's next for her... Recently, we've switched to Solid Angle's Arnold renderer and doing a complete reshading for her, as well as fur/hair remake with Yeti and elaborate facial setup. Visit the project facebook page and subscribe to get the latest info on the production:
